Closed-loop recycling is a recycling process through which a manufactured good is recycled back into itself or a similar product without significant degradation or waste.
This process can be as simple as using recycled aluminum to make new cans, or as complicated as weaving reclaimed plastic bottles into polyester for clothing and other products.
For the closed-loop system to function properly, consumers, recyclers and manufacturers must work together to reclaim valuable materials from our waste stream and use them to make new products.
The 3 important steps in this process are:
Collection: It is when consumers toss recyclable products into their curbside bins or take them to a local drop-off center. Collected materials are processed at recycling facilities and prepared to be sold to manufacturers.
Manufacturing: Manufacturing recycled materials into new products is the second step of the closed-loop system. Manufacturing plants create new products from recycled goods and ship them to retailers to be sold as new items.
Purchasing: The third and possibly most important step in the closed-loop system is when the consumer, purchase products made from recycled materials. When consumers purchase recycled-content products, they essentially “close the loop.”
In this podcast, we will learn from the experience of some of the leading companies that have implemented the closed-loop recycling systems and understand the importance of the global impact these practices have.
